Growth & Development Officer Vacancies - Kent Scouts

We have an exciting opportunity for a number of part-time Growth and Development Officers to join our team.

Kent Scouts is one of the biggest mixed youth organisations in the county and we change lives by offering young people fun, adventure and challenging experiences. As you may be aware, the pandemic impacted all aspects of life and Scouting in Kent has adapted to meet the demands. As we move into this new phase, we want to support our existing volunteers and help them to recruit new adults to better respond to the increase in interest from young people.

Outline of the role

A successful candidate will support leaders and other volunteers to grow Scouting across Kent, using both face to face and virtual methods. This will include

  • Working with others to identify and overcome recruitment challenges
  • Advising on appropriate techniques and resources
  • Engaging parents of existing members with a view to converting them into new volunteers
  • Undertaking events to attract volunteers and young people such as section open evenings, school assemblies, fetes, workshops, taster and promotional events
  • Ensuring the safe running of events
  • Promoting Scouting through different mediums
  • Welcoming new adults and young people into Scouting
  • Helping to run sections alongside new adults for a period of time, enabling sustainability
  • Any other duties as may reasonably be required

Desirable knowledge, skills and abilities

  • A knowledge of Scouting or Guiding
  • Understanding of barriers to volunteering and appreciation of the need for flexibility
  • A knowledge of tools available both in Scouting and externally to encourage volunteering
  • Knowledge of IT and virtual conferencing packages (Zoom or Teams)
  • Ability to engage with adults and young people
  • Ability to run an activity
  • Presentation / training skills
  • Volunteer management skills
  • Possess a high level of communication skills to ensure effective relationships

Other essential criteria

  • Hold a full driving licence and have access to a car
  • Flexibility to work frequent evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work from a home-based office
  • Enthusiastic and able to enthuse others
  • Committed to the fundamentals and values of Scouting, including being willing and able to be a Member of the Scouts
  • Ability to work independently of direct supervision
  • Ability to work as part of a team
